Living with Allergies: A 1:1 Interview with My Brother
You’ve seen how my allergies have shaped and taught my husband — now it’s time to see things from my brother’s perspective. Take a peek!
What was your reaction when you first learned how serious mine were?
“I remember waking up in the middle of the night as a toddler to some commotion in our house. I had no idea what was going on but came to find out the next morning, mom and dad had to take you to the hospital. It was hard to understand at that point but still scary. From then on out, the way we all handled your allergies in the house changed drastically.”
What was the hardest part for you to adjust to — whether at home, restaurants, or family events?
“It's always just been about patience. Anytime we go out to eat, we always need to check the menu ahead of time to ensure it's allergy friendly. If not, those restaurants get crossed off our list of options. Once at the restaurant, it's important to expect a few extra minutes to be taken at the start of the meal in order ask the wait staff or chef the necessary questions about what is safe to eat and what possible substitutes are available.”
What are some things you do now, almost second nature, that you never thought about before?
“Even though we don't live in the same house anymore, I still always wash my hands after eating anything with nuts. It's become second nature at this point!”
How do you explain my allergies to friends, extended family, or people I’m meeting for the first time?
“Usually I give people a heads up so they're not surprised if we're going out to eat. Giving some info ahead of time helps to avoid any confusion or awkward questions. However, it's never a problem!”
Any advice on how to be supportive without making them feel overly different or restricted?
“Being flexible is a big thing here. Someone with food allergies may feel left out if they can't partake in plans because of the food available. Always taking into consideration their feelings can avoid making someone feel bad about something they have no control over. Thoughtfulness goes a long way here.”
Always so grateful for my family and all the ways they’ve supported me throughout this journey! Can’t wait to share more interviews soon.
XXOO,
JJ
