Eating Out with Allergies

Eating out with food allergies can definitely feel stressful — from worrying about cross-contamination to trying to explain your needs clearly. Over time, I’ve learned that having a simple, polite, and clear script in your back pocket makes dining out way safer and way less overwhelming!

Below is the exact script I use when I’m out at restaurants, plus some of my favorite tips to help make your next meal out smoother and safer.

My Go-To Restaurant Script

“Hi! I have some food allergies, and I just want to make sure [insert your meal] is safe. I’m allergic to [list your allergens clearly — e.g., peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, and dairy]. Could you let me know if [insert meal] is safe, with no risk of cross-contamination? If possible, could the chef prepare my meal separately? Thanks so much — I really appreciate your help!”

Tips for Eating Out Safely

  • Give the restaurant a quick call ahead of time to ask about allergy accommodations.

  • Stick to simpler dishes with fewer ingredients to keep things safe.

  • Always carry your emergency meds (like your epi-pen and benedryl) just in case.

  • Traveling? Bring allergy translation cards to make communicating easier.
